Rainwater Harvesting
Rainwater Harvesting is the collection of water from surfaces such as roofs or driveways and can provide up to 100,000 litres of water per year from a small to medium sized area. This water can be used for washing the car, watering gardens, toilet flushing and washing machine. Rainwater harvesting systems can be installed in both new and existing properties, and has the potential to reduce mains water usage. Rainwater harvesting can save you up to 50% on your water bills whilst benefiting the environment and reduce your carbon footprint.
A typical rainwater harvesting system comprises a collection surface such as your roof and driveway, a filter and a storage tank. When calculating the size of storage tank needed the figure should either be 5% of the potential rainwater fall in a year or 5% of your annual water consumption, then use the smaller of the two figures. Many systems use a control unit to monitor the water level in the storage tank and display information to the user. If levels drop too low the system switches to the mains water supply and if levels get too high an overflow trap drains off the excess water.
